Joe Sandoval and Mercedes Chavez enjoy the comfort, amenities and location of their home at the MLK Brickstones in Des Moines. With the convenience of being located next to downtown Des Moines, Joe makes an easy commute to work and looks forward to coming home to relax and watch television.

Although you might usually find him kicked back in his recliner watching television, both Joe and Mercedes enjoy hosting guests and cooking in their home, made easy with the amenities the unit offers: energy efficient appliances, in-unit dishwasher, kitchen island, open floor plan and community herb garden.

The MLK Brickstones were made possible by Housing Tax Credits and HOME funds provided by the Iowa Finance Authority.

Joe and  Mercedes  have settled right in, truly turning their unit at the MLK Brickstones  into a home, or as Joe  says, “Es Mi Casa.”

Busy. This one word sums up the life of Hawa Awad. Being an immigrant to the United States, a single, working mom and caring for four energetic children, there isn’t a dull moment in Hawa’s life.

That is why she is so thankful to end the day at her place in the Homes of Oakridge. Although she looks forward to spending time with her children, she is grateful that they can burn off some energy at the playground, conveniently located right outside her door, or at the new community center down the street.

Funding for home improvements and the new community center were provided by Iowa Finance Authority’s Housing Tax Credit Program.

Not only does Homes of Oakridge provide the amenities her kids love, it has become a community of close friends and neighbors. And this is what the kids look forward to most every day, “spending time with friends.”

Success, it’s the one word Jeanmarie Kapp can use when describing her development at The Taylor Renaissance. She did what most people thought was going to be impossible, turning a 19th century schoolhouse into a beautiful, affordable, senior-living facility. A lot of the original infrastructure was kept intact, the old schoolroom doors, hardwood floors, entryway staircase and brick façade.

Fritz Miller became interested in the project from a historical perspective when he heard what Jeanmarie had in mind. He helped her navigate the in’s and out’s of the building’s historical requirements, and when it came time to look for a new place for his mom, you can guess where he went first.

Alice, Fritz’s mom, can’t imagine a better place to live. She enjoys the amenities that the Taylor Renaissance offers, including its dog-friendly policy. The community rooms also offer a place for Alice to meet others and engage in good conversation. Set within a neighborhood, it’s an ideal place for Fritz to get outside with his mom and, of course, enjoy all the historical surroundings.
